Buran Pass Trek

When one think of a trek in Himachal which has the beauty and accessibility Buran Pass trek comes first in the mind. This is a trek that offers an overall experience of the mountain range, forests and grasslands which are surely going to thrill you to the fullest. Buran Pass connects Rohru in Shimla district to Barua Village in Kinnaur district.
The trek has a wide trail which doesn’t exhaust you however you still find the thrill entirely. The trek has a lot to offer you like huge grasslands, Water streams, landscapes, Waterfall, lakes and snow, it is a combo pack for adventure seekers. The trek has to be in the bucket list as Buran Pass trek is for all.

ITINERARY OVERVIEW

  • Day 01- Shimla to Janglik (Travel by Road)
  • Day 02- Janglik to Dayra
  • Day 03- Dayra to Litham
  • Day 04- Litham (Acclimatization day and trek up to Chandranahn Lake)
  • Day 05- Litham to Dhunda
  • Day 06- Dhunda to Munirang
  • Day 07 – Munirang to Barua to Shimla
 

ITINERARY

Day – 01: Shimla to Janglik (Travel by road) | 160 kms | 6-8 hrs | 2800 Mts |
Shimla will be the meeting point for all fellow trekkers, trek leaders and support team. From Shimla we will drive up to Janglik Village (2800 Mts) which is a drive of 6 to 7 hours, The night we stay here in a home stay and trek leader will brief you about the upcoming plan and schedule of the each day and team gets ready for the same. Janglik is a typical Pahari village which is rich in the custom & culture and temple and houses are built in Kath Khuni architecture style.

  • Overnight stay in a Home stay.
  • A briefing and planning with the team and co trekkers.
  • Village walks in the morning.
 

Day – 02: Janglik to Dayra | 04 kms | 3-5 hrs | 3400 Mts|
Today we start our trek from Janglik after a village walk and breakfast. The climb of about an hour will take us in the valley from here you will be able to see many other villages and the glimpse of entire route. The trail goes through Pine, deodar and oak trees which surely boost you up with cool breezes. We will cross some shepherd hut and halt for photography and snacks. The Dayra meadows will be our spot for camping tonight. In the evening we’ll climb the nearby hillock for better acclimatization. After coming back from the acclimatization walk, dinner will be served at your campsite.

Day – 03: – Dayra to Litham | 03 kms | 03 hrs | 3600 Mtrs |
The beautiful morning at Dayra refreshes you with the stunning views. Start your day exploring the Dayara meadows after having your breakfast and hot tea that will be served at your campsite. Continuing our trek through dense forest and green meadows will take you to the Huge grassland Litham. You can refill your water bottles on the was as there are many water streams with fresh flowing water. You will get a stunning view of Dhauladhar ranges before reaching Litham, troops of horses and sheep’s can be found in a large number here. Camp here and you will have the entire afternoon to rest and prepare yourselves for challenges that lie ahead.

  • Today you will see Silver Birch (Bhoj) forest and Chandranahan waterfall.
  • Views of the snow capped mountains of the Dhauladhar range
  • Overnight stay in Camps.
 

Day – 04:- Litham (Acclimatization day and visit to Chandranahn Lake | 06 kms | 4-6 hrs | 4200 Mts |
Before we cross the pass we will have to be much more prepared by mentally and physically so we give this day for acclimatize ourselves here at Litham. Since we will have the entire day we trek up to Chandranahan Lake which has a steep ascent and decent while coming back. Nothing else in this trail can make you more tough then today’s climb.
There are several small lakes so you can explore some of them which is close by, all of them are considered to be sacred hence there will not be any swimming allowed.

  • Visit to Chandranahan Lake
  • Spend some time and relax and Photography
  • Back to Litham by Lunch
 

Day – 05:-Litham To Dhunda | 04 kms | 4-5 hrs | 4000 Mts |
Start early to reach early. Our trail today is very well marked by the shepherds and has a mixture of gradual and steep walk to reach Dhunda. Walk along with the water stream and keep drinking lot of water. You will be able to see the Dhauladhar range, Gunas pass, grassland of Litham in the left and Rupin Valley in the right. It has a sharp ascent which gives you the first view of Buran Ghati to your left. Spend some time at this spot to click some wonderful pictures. Keep walking on the shepherd trail which leads you to Buran pass which is now clearly visible. We will camp at Dhunda which is surrounded by the high mountains. We will have our lunch and relax in your tents.

  • Overnight stay in camps.
 

Day – 06: – Dhunda to Munirang via Buran Pass | 07 kms | 6-8 hrs | 4550 Mtrs |
This is the day when we cross the Pass. Leaving early from the Dhunda campsite follow the ridge and hop over boulders towards the base of the pass. From the base, it is an hour long climb to the top, mostly on snow. The day becomes little thrilling and adventures today, “Why shouldn’t it be?” as we all had come for this. Buran Pass at exactly 15,000 ft is a technical climb. It is a narrow ledge on the top. The drop on the other side is sharp and steep which means ascending and descending both is technical today. Without a rope and ice axe the descent may be risky.
Spend some time on the pass and start descending down carefully which again is the most challenging part of the entire trek. We will reach Munirang by late afternoon or evening.

  • Crossing over Buran Pass.
  • Packed lunch will be served.
  • Camping by the riverside at Munirang.
 

Day – 07:- Munirang to Barua | 05 kms | 2-4 hrs | 2000 Mtr |
Leave early from Munirang post breakfast. It is an easy descent of 03 to 04 kms today so shall reach Barua village early. Reminiscing the entire journey that how you started and what all memories are you taking back from these mountains leave to Shimla.

  • Leave to Barua and then Shimla post breakfast
  • Memories from the mountains.
