About the Hornbill Festival

Nagaland is called the ‘land of festivals, and thus the Hornbill Festival becomes the 'Festival of Festivals'. It is a Naga cultural spectacle held every year in Nagaland during the first week of December. This 7day celebration was initiated in 2000, as Nagaland’s premier cultural event, showcasing the heritage of its 17 Naga tribes and promote inter-tribal interaction. Th festival is named after the hornbill bird, a symbol of fidelity, beauty, and grace in Naga folklore. Colourful ancient attire, sharp weapons, feathers of hornbill, unique tribal accessories and ornaments used by the tribes identify and symbolize this one of a kind festival. Hornbill festival offers a great platform to the tribes where they display their unique arts and craft including paintings, wood carvings and sculptures, weaponry, ethnic food fairs, indigenous sports and games like Naga wrestling, archery etc which attracts a great number of global travellers to this unexplored part of the world.

While the visitor gets a closer insight and understanding of the people and culture of Nagaland, at the same time the festival aims at reviving and protecting the rich tradition and heritage of Nagaland and display its extravagance.

At Western Himalaya, we have put together an itinerary encapsulating the vibrance of this magical event to bring together an experience of a lifetime.
